cynic but true

I have just had THE most amazing realization. People will ALWAYS do what they really want to do. It’s cynical and it’s correct. For example, take a missionary. This is someone that people see as self sacrificing and to some extent they are, but ultimately, they want to please God enough to do whatever it takes, so even if the requirement is something distasteful, they do it because they want to in their quest to please God.

Another example is people who phone and crowd around you when trouble strikes (perhaps more of a southern thing). They all claim that they want to help you if you need it you only need to call. They don’t really want to help you, they feel it is their Christian obligation to help you but they are given an out by saying to themselves that if you need help you will call them. The truth is that most of us would never ask for help and we all know that. The true Christian heart gives without being asked. Everyone else isn’t suffering from Christian charity, they are only afraid of what “duty” they may be asked to perform in the name of charity.

I am not saying that it is all selfish, not really. People who make choices to give up things to help others are defiantly not being selfish, but they are still making a choice. In their case, the choice is to do whatever God asks of them because they find their ultimate happiness in obeying God.

So, my discovery is that people will always do what they REALLY want to do. The difference between Christians and non-believers is that Christians SHOULD be making their choices based on the desire to please God consuming their lives rather than their own personal wants or needs and the non-believer is making a choice to do whatever it is that makes them feel good about themselves or feel happy.

We do ultimately want we REALLY want to do. It is the motivation that is the difference. Someone who truly wants to please God will follow His dictates the others will simply say, call me if you need anything when they KNOW there is need.

Humm, yes, this is a bit biased based on recent events, doesn’t make it any less true and I don’t blame anyone for their choices. I am as bad if not worse than everyone else, because with understanding come greater responsibility. My choices now carry a much greater weight because of my knowledge. Is what I am doing, self satisfying, or making me feel good about myself or is what I am doing an effort to please a loving Father because I love Him?
